Center for Teaching and Learning - Clovis Community College: Canvas Feature Items

What Are Feature Options?

Canvas feature options are settings that let you choose whether to enable certain tools or updates in your course. These options allow you to try out new or enhanced Canvas features before they’re made standard across the system. Turning on a feature option can help you explore new ways to design, teach, or engage with students, but it’s a good idea to review what each feature does first to make sure it supports your course goals.

Use this Canvas Guide to learn how to turn feature items on and off: How do I manage feature options for a course?

Course-Level Feature Options Available

Assignment Enhancements

Assignment Enhancements allows supported student assignments to display an improved interface and submission workflow. Peer reviews are also supported.

Enhanced Rubrics

Enhanced Rubrics provides visual and functional enhancements to rubrics across Canvas.

Assignment Enhancements must be enabled for students to view the enhanced rubric.

ePub Exporting

ePub Exporting allows all users to download a course as an ePub file.

External Collaborations Tool

External Collaborations Tool allows users to view an updated interface for Collaborations when an institution has added the Google Apps LTI or the Microsoft LTI.

Learning Mastery Gradebook

The Learning Mastery (Outcome) Gradebook helps you and your instructors assess the outcomes that are being used in Canvas courses.

New Quizzes

The New Quizzes LTI is an assessment engine that integrates with Canvas and will replace Classic Quizzes functionality.

Performance and Usability Upgrades for SpeedGrader

Modernized SpeedGrader Platform enhances performance for a faster, smoother experience for users handling larger courses or complex assignments. Upgrading the backend technology improves SpeedGrader's ability to manage high-demand tasks more efficiently and reliably.

Preserve Group Set During Assignment or Discussion Copy

Preserve group set during assignment or discussion copy
allows group assignments or discussions to be copied to another course by creating a group set with the same name in the destination course, unless a matching group set already exists.

Quiz Log Auditing

Quiz Log Auditing allows instructors to investigate problems that a student may have when taking a quiz.

Smart Search The Smart Search feature uses AI to understand search queries, giving more accurate and relevant results without needing complicated search terms or tools.

Student Learning Mastery Gradebook

The Student Learning Mastery Gradebook shows students how they are being scored against outcomes being used in Canvas courses.

Submission Stickers

The Submission Stickers feature option allows instructors to add stickers to individual and group assignment submissions per attempt, offering an engaging way to provide feedback.

Once enabled at the account or course level, instructors can apply stickers through the Traditional Gradebook tray, Individual Gradebook, and SpeedGrader.

Submission Stickers only work in courses that have also enabled the Assignment Enhancements feature option.

YouTube Content Migration

When the YouTube Migration Tool feature option is enabled at the course level and Studio is detected, the migration tool displays in the course.

The migration tool helps Studio admins locate and easily migrate YouTube videos embedded in Canvas to Canvas Studio. Converted videos are added in the Course Collection using a Studio admin user named YouTube admin.

Youtube Content Overlay

Displays an overlay message in Canvas for YouTube videos not hosted in Canvas Studio to alert viewers that ads may appear. The message displays in the browser before the video plays.
