About the Guide

This guide serves to connect our community to resources available through the Clovis Community College Library and beyond with regards to Hispanic Americans*, a group that includes those individuals "of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin" (US Census Bureau), to honor their vast contributions to our society.

Hispanic Heritage Month History

In 1968 under President Johnson, a week-long Hispanic heritage celebration was enacted and held in mid September. Two decades later, a bill was submitted that called for a month long observance; while this bill did not go on to pass, a new bill was submitted shortly afterward that would amend the previous "National Hispanic Heritage Week" with a proposed month-long observance. This bill was subsequently signed into law by President Reagan on August 17, 1988, creating the Hispanic Heritage Month we know today, now celebrated from September 15 to October 15.

* A note on terminology: we acknowledge that there is much discussion today as to the use of the term "Hispanic" to describe many groups of individuals from different countries with unique cultures and backgrounds. In this guide we will use the terms utilized by the resources themselves, as they were published, without any intention of harm or disrespect to our readers.
