Children's Literature: Find Books

Searching for Children's Books

When using the OneSearch library catalog, one way to quickly locate a picture book on a specific topic is to first enter "juvenile AND" followed by your topic in one word or phrase.

Example: juvenile AND cats

  • Juvenile is typically a term in the subject(s) of a book for children in the library catalog.
  • The command word AND combines the two concepts in your search to help you narrow down to what you need. "AND" must be capitalized for the catalog to recognize this command.
  • Narrowing your search to CCC Library Catalog in the search box will ensure you will only retrieve physical items located at the Clovis Community College library. If you want to search other SCCCD libraries also, choose the "SCCCD Library Catalog" option.

Picture books can be located by using the exact term "picture books" (with quotations) in a search. Quotations around a phrase make sure that the exact phrase is searched. Notice the "AND" combining this term with a specific topic in the example below:

Example: "picture books" AND dogs

A physical book's "address" within the library is called a call number; they are usually placed on the spine of a book, and they help identify the book in the online catalog. The call numbers assigned to picture books at our library will begin with the letters XP. For example, the call number in our library for the picture book Harold and the Purple Crayon is XP J6301h 1983. Therefore, another search you could try using the catalog would be adding the search term "XP" to the topic of your search. Remember to search the "CCC Library Catalog" collection, and the majority of your results will be from our picture book collection.

Example: "XP" AND farming
