Definitions

poetry, n. Composition in verse or some comparable patterned arrangement of language in which the expression of feelings and ideas is given intensity by the use of distinctive style and rhythm; the art of such a composition.

verse, n. A succession of words arranged according to natural or recognized rules of prosody and forming a complete metrical line; one of the lines of a poem or piece of versification.

prose, n. Language in the form in which it is typically written (or spoken), usually characterized as having no deliberate metrical structure (in contrast with verse or poetry).

Poets Laureate

Fresno: Sponsored by the Fresno Arts Council, the city appointed Joseph Rios as the city's fifth Poet Laureate for 2023-2025.

California: In November of 2022, Fresno City College professor and former Fresno Poet Laureate Lee Herrick was appointed as California's Poet Laureate.

United States: Ada Limón is the country's 24th Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress.
