The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks - Sanwo English 1A: Find Books

While books are not required for your assignments, you may find them useful. Below are some resources for helping you find books. We have borrowing agreements with the other SCCCD campuses, so if we don't have a book, we can order it and have it sent to CCC for you to check out from us. Books can be checked out for 6 weeks and renewed for an additional 3 weeks if you need it longer.

Using Books for Research

Why use Books?

Books are not a part of your 7-10 scholarly, peer-reviewed articles that you are required to have for your paper. However, using a book can put your topic in perspective. Books are more likely to provide background information on a topic to help you understand it better. They can provide a wider scope of information about a subject, which can help you narrow a topic. Books also contain references to the sources they used and you might find that you're interested in finding those sources - this is called citation chasing.

Tips for Finding & Using Books in Research

  • Search using keywords or key phrases rather than whole sentences or questions
    • Example: use "genetic ethics" instead of a question like "What is genetic ethics?"
  • Once you have searched, use the left sidebar to narrow your search results by format, author, language, and more
    • This gives you the results more relevant to you. Books in German when you can't read German aren't helpful or useful to you.
  • Once you have clicked on a book in your search results to learn more, scroll down the page to the "Details" section to see the table of contents ("Contents")
    • You will never need the whole book for your research and you are a busy student - you don't have time to read the whole thing. But you might find a chapter/section that would be relevant to your topic
  • When you go to the library to find the book you want to check out, look at the books around it on the shelf
    •  Books are organized by subjects and chances are that the books next to your book are about the same topic
  • EBooks are a really easy and convenient way to get information on a topic because you don't have to go into a library to check them out, you don't have to worry about turning them back in on time, and they're available 24/7
    • EBooks can be accessed through their respective links in the library catalog and you can navigate the eBook through the hyperlinked table of content in each of the books
  • If you're writing on something current that's happened within the past year, you might not find current books on your topic
    • Books take a long time to get researched and published so they are not as current as articles and other forms of information
