Verbal Communication

Verbal communication is the use of spoken words to communicate our message.
 

Examples of Oral Communication: 

  • Face-to-face conversations
  • Class presentation
  • Delivering a speech
  • Talking on the phone
  • Ordering food at a restaurant
  • Host on a Radio 
  • Interviews

Nonverbal Communication

Nonverbal communication is the use of body language to convey a message. 

Examples of Body Language Communication:

  • Waving (An indication of "Hello" or "Goodbye" in some cultures)
  • Head nod (An indication of agreement)
  • Finger tapping (Impatient or tired of waiting)
  • Arms crossed over chest (A gesture indicating defensiveness or stress)
  • Making eye contact (An indication you're paying attention)
  • Handshakes
  • Hugs 
  • Smile
  • Eye roll
  • Sign languages

Visual Communication

Visual communication is the use of images or videos to communicate your message visually.

Examples of Visual Communication: 

  • Infographics
  • Videos
  • Charts
  • Illustrations
  • Photographs

Written Communication

Written communication uses written words to convey your message.

Examples of Written Communication: 

  • Writing a letter
  • Text messages
  • Sending an email
  • Books
  • Writing an essay
  • Taking notes
  • Posting on social media
  • Writing a blog
  • Writing an online review

Group Communication

Group communication is the interaction between members of a small group of individuals. 

 

Some examples of group communication are:

  • Class Discussions
  • Families
  • Friends
  • Work groups
  • Sports team

Interpersonal Communication

The process by which people express feelings, emotions, and information through verbal and nonverbal messages.

 

Some examples of interpersonal communication are:

  • Face-to-face conversations
  • Phone conversations
  • Sign language
  • Using body language

Intercultural Communication

The communication between individuals of different linguistic, cultural, or social groups.

 

Some examples of intercultural communication are:

  • Conversations between an African American woman and an Asian woman
  • A Buddhist conversing with a Christian person
  • A Nigerian student studying in Germany
  • A Chinese tourist interacting with hotel staff in France
