Plagiarism is the "inadvertent or purposeful stealing of intellectual property by failing to properly acknowledge the owner." The Student's Survival Guide to Research, page 202. Intellectual property can refer to a person's ideas, words, sounds, video clips, images, and more. Sometimes it's done intentionally. But sometimes, plagiarism happens unintentionally like when you forget to cite a source or cite correctly. Regardless of your intentions, if you take intellectual property and try to pass it off as your own, it is plagiarism and it does have serious consequences that can include an "F" on an assignment that contains plagiarism and possibly a report in your permanent record.
